Breast Screening

The use of Digital Infrared Imaging is based on the principle that metabolic activity and vascular circulation in both pre-cancerous tissue and the area surrounding a developing breast cancer is almost always higher than in normal breast tissue. In an ever-increasing need for nutrients, cancerous tumors increase circulation to their cells by holding open existing blood vessels, opening dormant vessels, and creating new ones (neoangiogenesis). This process frequently results in an increase in regional surface temperatures of the breast. DII uses ultra-sensitive medical infrared cameras and sophisticated computers to detect, analyze, and produce high-resolution images of these temperature variations. Because of DII’s extreme sensitivity, these temperature variations may be among the earliest signs of breast cancer and/or a pre-cancerous state of the breast.

WHAT MAKES BREAST THERMOGRAPHY SO UNIQUE?

Thermography uses no radiation and poses absolutely NO health risks to the patient. Consequently, scans may be performed at any frequency necessary.

Signs of pre-cancerous tissue, or early stage cancers that are too small to be found by physical examination and mammography, may be adjunctively discovered with thermography

Certain types of cancers will not be detected on a mammogram for various reasons, but many of such cancers may be discovered with thermography.

Difficulties in reading mammograms can occur in women who are on hormone replacement, nursing or have fibrocystic, large dense, or enhanced breasts.  These types of breast differences do not cause difficulties in reading thermograms.

Since thermography does not involve contact with the skin, the procedure is quite comfortable.

Studies show that an abnormal thermogram is the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer, 10 times more significant than a family history of the disease.

Therefore, in the absence of other positive tests, an abnormal thermogram gives a woman an early warning that a pathological process may be occurring. By maintaining close monitoring of her breast health with serial thermography

self-breast exams, clinical examinations and other tests, a woman has a much better chance of detecting cancer at its earliest stage and preventing invasive tumor growth.

Preparing for your imaging appointment

Before you arrive for your thermogram, certain protocols must be followed in order to ensure that your images reflect accurate information.

Please read the following instructions and strictly adhere to them.

  • No prolonged sun exposure (especially sunburn) to the body areas being imaged 5 days prior to the exam.
  • No use of deodorants, lotions, creams, powders, or makeup (no facial makeup for full body or upper body scans) the day of the exam.
  • No shaving of the areas to be imaged the day of the exam.
  • No treatment (chiropractic, acupuncture, TENS, physical therapy, electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, hot or cold pack use) or physical stimulation of the areas to be imaged for 24 hours before the exam.
  • No exercise 4 hours prior to the exam.
  • If bathing, it must be no closer than 1 hour before the exam.
  • If you are using pain medications, please avoid taking them for 4 hours prior to the examination. You must consult with the prescribing physician for his or her consent prior to any change in medication use such as this.
  • You must wait at least 4 weeks after having a fine needle or core biopsy of the breast before a thermogram can be performed.
  • You must wait at least 8 weeks after having a lumpectomy or surgical biopsy of the breast before a thermogram can be performed.
  • If you have had any surgical procedure within the last 12 weeks, please notify our office before coming in for your appointment.

  • If you are scheduled for a breast thermogram, the same protocols above applies along with no physical stimulation of the breasts for 24 hours before the exam, and if you are nursing please try to nurse as far from 1 hour prior to the exam as possible.

  • Please note: During the examination you will be disrobed (from the waist up for breast exams, and buttocks exposed for lower body exams) during part of the examination for both imaging and to allow for the surface temperature of the body to equilibrate with the room. A female technician is provided for all our female patients.
